On this amazing trip, we checked off my husband’s #1 bucket list, the Amazon rainforest, and my #1, Machu Picchu, while traveling throughout the wondrous country of Peru. This was our first trip where we paired up with a travel agency, Kuoda Travel, for a vacation. They happened to offer all of the destinations that we wanted to see and they flawlessly took care of all the arrangements throughout our entire trip.
Day 1 – Land at Jorge Chavez International Airport, Lima Peru at 9:35pm (click here for a detailed post on getting from the U.S. to the Amazon)
Meet Kuoda host at airport. Host will escort us to hotel – Wyndham Costa del Sol
and help with check in. (Passports are needed to check into each hotel.)
Day 2 – Breakfast at hotel
Host will help with check out and bring bags back to airport
Flight LATAM 2075 from Lima to Puerto Maldonado 9:56 am – 1:13 pm
Meet Refugio Amazonas Guides at airport. Take a van to Rainforest Expeditions where
our luggage will be stowed. Bring only what we need for the next three days into the
jungle.
Take a bus to the boat dock (one hour)
Travel by boat (one hour) to Refugio Amazonas Lodge. Eat lunch on the boat.
90 stairs and 15 min hike to lodge
Orientation at lodge, unpack, dinner
Twilight Excursion hike through the jungle.
Day 3 – Wake at 4:30 to hike back to boat
Boat Ride (about 2 hours) to Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – hike from boat to Clay Lick
through Tambopata National Reserve – 15 minutes
Eat breakfast at clay lick while waiting for the Macaws to descend. (We stayed at the clay
lick for 2 hours and 30 minutes)
Hike back to boat, boat back to lodge dock, hike back to lodge.
Lunch
Late Afternoon – Canopy Tower Tour – hike 1 hour to tower – climb tower – hike back
to lodge
Dinner
Presentation/Lecture on research being done in the rainforest
Day 4 – Breakfast
Hike to Oxbow Lake – 1 hour
Canoe Ride on Lake – feed piranhas – hike deeper into the jungle on far side of lake
Hike back to dock, boat ride across lake, hike back to lodge
Lunch
Mammal Clay Lick Hike – 30 minutes – wait for animals behind blind – 1 1/2 hours
Hike back to lodge
Dinner
Presentation/Lecture on research being done in the rainforest
Day 5 – Pack – leave luggage for guides to take
Breakfast
Hike back to boat dock – boat ride back to original launch – bus ride to Rainforest
Expeditions – collect luggage – bus ride to airport
Meet Kuoda host at airport – will help us check in, check our luggage
LATAM 2074 – flight to Cusco – 2:03 pm – 2:52 pm
Meet Kuoda host at airport – private van to the Pisac Market, stopping at scenic views of
the Sacred Valley – box lunch during ride
Shop at Pisac Market
Private van to Casa Andina Premium Valle Sagrado
Guide will help us check in
Day 6 – Breakfast at hotel
Private van with Kuoda guide – Drive to Ollantaytambo Ruins
Drive to Patacancha – hike down mountain into the valley
Lunch
Drive back to hotel – pack one carry on each for train ride tomorrow
Dinner
Day 7 – Breakfast at Hotel
Private van to train station
Vistadome train – Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes 9:15 am – arrive 10:52
Lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge
Hike/tour Machu Picchu with private guide
Bus ride down the mountain
Check in to El Mapi Hotel – guide will help with check in/check out
Dinner
Day 8 – Breakfast at Hotel – Guide takes care of check out and storing luggage
Bus Ride to Machu Picchu – private Kuoda tour guide
Bus Ride Down Mountain
Train ride back to Aguas Caliente (Vistadome #304) 3:48-5:29
Private van and guide will drive us to hotel in Cusco The Belmond Monasterio
Check into hotel
Dinner at Uchu
Day 9 – Breakfast at hotel
Guided tour of Cusco (Cusco Cathedral, San Blas)
Lunch
Shopping in Cusco (without guide)
Dinner at Cicciolina
Day 10 – Breakfast
Private van to airport – Kuoda guide will help us check bags
Flight LATAM 2004 – to Lima – 10:18-11:50
Kuoda driver and guide will meet us at airport and store luggage for the day
Private van to Barranco neighborhood
Dinner
Private van back to airport
Fly home 12:35 pm
