It is day four of our trip and our last morning in Hana. We started our day by watching the sun rise over Hana Bay while sitting on our lanai, a picture perfect moment of utter tranquility. The empty beach was calling to us, so we walked up and down the black sand savoring our last moments in Hana.

Where in the world is the Red Sand Beach? It used to be extremely difficult to find. The directions from Fodor’s Guide Book give you hints such as, “past the baseball field,” “walk through the grass lot to the trail below the cemetery,” “do not walk in the cemetery.”

When visiting Haleakala National Park in the Kipahulu District, past Hana, there are two very popular trails to choose from. I recommend doing both of them. The first and shorter trail (.5 mile), Kuola Point Trail, will take you to the lower falls of Ohe’o Gulch and the ocean.

The Ohe’o Gulch, or Seven Sacred Pools, call them what you will, is just one reason why you should drive past the town of Hana. Spectacular waterfalls, bamboo forests, incredible beaches are some more, but this post will focus on what you will find on your way to Ohe’o Gulch and the Gulch itself.

One piece of advice I would give to anyone traveling the Road to Hana is to stop and spend the night in Hana. The best waterfall on the island is past the town of Hana and is a 4 mile roundtrip hike, moderately strenuous, which you will be too tired to attempt if you try to do the drive to Hana and back to wherever you are staying in one day.
