The North Star Nature Preserve is 245 acres, not all available to the public, located in Aspen, Colorado.
Parking is very limited, and we ended up not taking our original hike because we could not find parking in that area.
The Roaring Fork River runs through the center of the preserve. You can sign up with a company to go paddle boarding or kayaking down the river. If we ever return to the area, I will definitely look into that.
We only stayed a short while. If you can get a good parking spot, the area is beautiful, peaceful and filled with wildlife. You could take a leisurely stroll on the approximately half mile James H. Smith Nature Trail.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The preserve is open from dawn till dusk.
- Parking is limited, so if you really want to hike here, go early.
- The hike is .57 miles and rated easy.
- There are many operators to choose from for water activities and paragliding.
We could have followed the road to get to the beginning of the trail, but we opted to head over to Weller Lake for a beautiful 1.1 mile RT hike and The Grottos’ Trail for an additional .6 mile loop. As always, wishing you happy travels and fantastic adventures in this thing called life.
